Dancing With People Who Think They’re Famous

8 03 2011

The 12th season of the ABC ballroom competiton series “Dancing with the Stars” kicks off on March 21.
That’s right, season 12. In the six years since DWTS premiered, in the summer of 2005, it has aired twice a year.

Past participants include soap stars Kelly Monaco (winner, S1), Cameron Mathison (S5) and Susan Lucci (S6); musicians Joey McIntyre (S1), Drew Lachey (winner, S2), Toni  Braxton (S7) and Michael Bolton (S11); athletes Jerry Rice (Runner-up, S2), Misty May-Treanor (S7), Lawrence Taylor (S8) and Shawn Johnson (winner, S8); and tabloid figures Heather Mills (S4), Priscilla Presley (S6) and Kim Kardashian (S7).

It was announced this week who from the Hollywood A-List B-List C-List D-List F-List will be pairing off with veteran choreographers like

The NY Daily News published the list of pairs for this bout, which will include former Playmate Kendra Wilkinson (with Louie van Amstel), boxer Sugar Ray Leonard (with Anne Trebunskaya), WWE personality Chris Jerico (with Cheryl Burke), ’80s actors Ralph Macchio (with Karina Smirnoff) and Kirstie Alley (with Maksim Chmerkovskiy).

When you hear the word “star” in this context, one would assume that legitamately popular and interesting people would be featured. That’s not so.
Hollywood is like high school and- for the most part- the people signing on for DWTS are the wannabes, the third stringers and the band geeks.

The more seasons of this show that ABC pumps out, the more I wonder whether Maksim Chmerkovskiy has ever sent a text to Derek Hough or taken Mark Ballas aside on set and said “We’re more famous than our partners. Again.”
